Fire Safety Tips For Kitchens And Other Cooking Areas

Posted on: 3 May 2021

The occurrence of fire during cooking is one of the primary causes of home fires. Most of the time, the ignition of common household items, including wall coverings, curtains, etc is responsible for causing fires in cooking equipment.

Kitchen fires are most often caused by:
● Leaving cooking food on the stove unattended.
● Placing flammable objects quite close to the heat source.
● Turning on the equipment unintentionally.

Let’s discuss fire safety tips for kitchens and other cooking areas:
● Never leave cooking food on the stove unattended. Suppose you have to go out of the kitchen for some urgent work, better hand over the kitchen to somebody else or turn off the stove.
● Keep your cooking area free of flammable materials. If there is anything placed near the stove that can catch fire, keep that away from it.
● Don’t let your children or pets roam in the kitchen. Keep them away from cooking areas by maintaining their distance of at least three feet away from the stove.
● Turn pot handles inward, i.e. towards the backside of the stove, resulting in preventing the handles from bumping and even away from children.
● Don’t wear loose clothing while cooking as it has a high chance of catching fire. Instead, wear short, well-fitted, or tightly rolled sleeves to prevent yourself from any tough luck.
● Keep your cooking area and your equipment clean and dust-free as built-up grease and dust behind the equipment can be the cause of fire hazards.
● If you are feeling sleepy or you are in a state of drowsiness, or if you have consumed alcohol, it is advisable not to get involved in kitchen work as slight carelessness can be the reason for some massive loss.
● Always keep a potholder, oven mitt, and lid handy so that you can use it instantly and don’t have to search for it. While cooking, if a small grease fire starts in a pan, smother the flames by sliding the lid over the pan. Do not remove the lid until it is completely cool down. Don’t try to throw water on the grease fire, and don’t spray a fire extinguisher on it, as it can lead to spreading the fire all over the kitchen.
● Last but not least, always keep a portable ABC multipurpose fire extinguisher in the kitchen that can be used properly.
